Awards For Heroism

Awards for heroism are made to Venturers by the National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America. Your Skipper and the council service center must submit an application on a regular form within six months of the deed of heroism.

The Honor Medal and the Heroism Award are for saving a life or attempting to safe a life at the risk of life. The Medal of Merit and the Certificate of Merit are for an outstanding act of service not necessarily involving risk of life.

William T. Hornaday Award

The William T. Hornaday Awards are for distinguished service to conservation. If you are interested in the conservation of the country's natural resources, you may wish to get involved in this awards program, named after the staunch conservationist and first director of the New York State Zoological Society, William T. Hornaday.

The Hornaday Awards Program includes a number of levels:

The Unit Award, which can be earned by Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Scout Teams, Venturing Crews, and Sea Scout Ships. The Unit Award is a Certificate awarded on the Council Level.

The Hornaday Badge, which can be earned by Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers and is also administered on the Council Level.

The Hornaday Gold Badge, which can be awarded to adult Scouters who have given significant leadership to conservation at a council or district level, and is also administered on the Council Level.

The Bronze and Silver Medals, which can be earned by Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers and are administered Nationally.

The Gold Medal, which is awarded to ADULT Scouters. The Gold Medal is administered Nationally. (No more than 6 are awarded annually.)

Gold Certificates, which are awarded to Corporations, or Organizations unaffiliated with Scouting. The Certificate is also administered Nationally. (No more than 6 are awarded annually.)

Conservation Good Turn Award

The World Conservation Award provides another opportunity for individual Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers to "think globally" and "act locally" to preserve and improve our environment. This program is designed to make Scouts and Venturers aware that all nations are closely related through natural resources and that we are interdependent with our world environment. Historic Trails Award

Throughout the nation there are numerous historic sites and trails. The Historic Trail Award was established to implement the cooperation between historic societies and Sea Scout Ships and Venturing units. This cooperation makes many exciting trips and treks possible for you. Love of America and devotion to our country depend upon a thorough appreciation of the ideals, principles, and traditions that have made our country strong. Fifty Miler Award

The 50-Miler Award is presented to each individual of a Sea Scout Ship for satisfactory participation on a cruise or wilderness trek that meets the award requirements. Individuals can qualify only as a member of their Ship. Those participating as members of a provisional Ship are not eligible. The primary objective of this program is to stimulate Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturer interest in the ideals of the movement and to promote activity that will result in personal fitness, self-reliance, knowledge of wood lore, and a practical understanding of conservation. USPS Finley Sea Scout Service Award

The USPS "Finley Sea Scout Service Award" recognizes those members and honorees of the United States Power Squadrons who are also youth or adult Sea Scout leaders, and who have provided outstanding civic, educational, and fraternal leadership to both the Sea Scouts and the United States Power Squadrons, through civic involvement, educational achievement, and active participation in both programs. Interpreter Strips

Scouts and Adults may wear this strip if they show their knowledge of a foreign language or the sign language for the deaf by:
  1. Carrying on a 5-minute conversation in this language.
  2. Translating a 2-minute speech or address.
  3. Writing a letter in the language (Does not apply for sign language)
  4. Translating 200 words or more from the written word.
The strip is worn centered above the "Boy Scouts Of America" strip.

Venturing Leadership Award

The Venturing Leadership Award is presented by councils, areas/regions, and the BSA National Council to Venturers and adults who have made exceptional contributions to Venturing and who exemplify the Venturing Code. for more information, click Here.

Young American Award

First presented in 1968, the council-level award is given to young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 to highlight publicly the importance of their excellent achievements and service to their community, state and nation. The council-level Young American Award consists of a plaque to be awarded at an appropriate council ceremony. The council office typically extends the application process in September to appropriate council units and community youth-serving organizations, who then submit nominations on behalf of their young adult constituents.
