Small Boat Handler

To qualify as a Small Boat Handler, as scout must demonstrate his/her knowledge and ability in the safe operation of small boats. This includes passing the Safe Boating course and demonstrating knowledge and ability in the following:

  • Aids to navigation
  • Buoyage system
  • Charts
  • Rules of the road
  • Lights required on boats
  • Emergency lights
  • Sound signals
  • Safety equipment
  • signaling devices
  • Boating safety and first aid
  • Checklists
  • Motor size compared to boat
  • Fueling—dangers, precautions, and procedures
  • Loading a small boat
  • When not to go out
  • Operating
  • Distress signals
  • Equipment—anchors, line, signaling, and first aid
  • Seamanship
  • Knots—overhand, square, sheet bend, bowline, clove hitch,
              two half hitches, and cleat hitch.
  • Types and uses of anchors
  • Wind and current
