Mission Statement

It is the mission of Ship 1 to prepare young men to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

This will be accomplished through a proven program of leadership training and values-based activities with it's own code of conduct. The Scouting program has reached out to more than 4 million young men and women and helped them through their formative years in an atmosphere of fun, fellowship, and adventure. The Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training.

Our program serves young men age 14 yrs through 18 yrs. Once enrolled in the program, young men can participate until age 21. At age 18 they become eligible to become junior officers to further advance their leadership training. We also have a program to allow mature young men age 12 & 13 to join a feeder troop and work within our program until they reach Venturing age (14 years old). The program is administered by a group of dedicated adult volunteers registered with, and trained by, The Boy Scouts of America.

Our program is operated from the Stockton Sea Scout Base located at 3100 Monte Diablo Blvd. in Stockton, California, along the Stockton Deep Water Channel. (Next to the Stockton Rod & Gun Club) There we have docking for our ship, meeting rooms, classrooms, and activity grounds for training and other program related events.

SSS Point Weber--Our training vessel. An 82 Ft. point class cutter, built by the Coast Guard for the U.S. Navy. She was acquired by the Sea Scouts when she was replaced by larger, faster equipment by the Navy.

We have weekly meetings on Tuesday eve. at 1830hrs (6:30PM) at the Stockton Sea Base. We usually cruise the ship on weekends at least once a month, many times, more often than that. There are many Sea Scout bases located throughout the delta and San Francisco Bay area which hold various events throughout the year which we participate in. We have an annual long cruise during the summer which is usually 10 to 15 days long. There are over 1000 miles of waterway in the delta giving us ample cruising opportunities. The SSS Point Weber has also cruised most of the west coast of the U.S. from San Diego to British Columbia.

Our program is operated under the oversight of BSA and The Point Weber Association, a not for profit corporation. We operate solely on private donations from individuals, corporations, and supporting foundations. We do a number of service projects for various organizations and the community throughout the year, some of which are income generating. In most cases, the income generated from these activities goes directly to the individual scouts who participate to help with their cruise fees, uniforms, and other program expenses. The scouts also hold some fund raisers during the year to help with program costs. Our annual budget is aprrox. $18,000 to $20,000 spent on insurance, fuel, maintenance, and program costs. We accept donations of cash, services and equipment related to our program needs, and boats, which we sell to help finance our program. All donations are tax deductible. The entire staff is all volunteer. It is our goal to keep the program at as low a cost as possible to each scout and his family. Typically a weekend cruise will cost each scout $20 to $50, depending on how far we are cruising. There is an annual registration fee of $10 charged by the Boy Scouts. Uniforms for the program are purchased by each scout. Some events have small fees for participation and we include these with the cost of the cruise.
