Training for Scouts & Leaders

Training for both youth and adults is an important part of Sea Scouting.  According to Coast Guard statistics, Sea Scouts are the safest group on the water. As one of the most important parts of Sea Scouting, we offer a wide variety of training opportunities for Sea Scouts and adult leaders.

Training for youth in the program is an integral part of the advancement program.  This training is designed to help build confidence in the youth and aid in learning leadership skills while giving them needed skills to advance.  These skills can be carried to all other areas of their lives for years to come.  Some skills taught are specific maritime skills, like line handling, navigation, piloting, engineering, etc., while others are skills related to leadership to help in their successful journey through life.  Other skills learned in the Scouting program like first aid and CPR help them become better citizens.

Training for adults in Sea Scouting helps the adult leaders administer the Sea Scout program effectively.  This training is developed from years of experience and performed by the most experienced Sea Scouters.  This includes leader basic training, advanced leader training, and program specific training in areas of unit leadership, teaching skills, and safety. The leadership training philosophy of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide adult leaders with fundamental information about the aims and purposes of the movement, as well as specifics about their particular roles in Scouting. A trained leader is knowledgeable in the role being performed. The knowledge and confidence of a trained leader are quickly sensed by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, or Venturers and are a positive influence on their lives. Training is also offered by the U.S. Coast Guard and other organizations to help adult leaders provide the best and safest program possible.

In the left column of this page, scouts can find training for advancement, and resources to advanced training for leadership skills. More advanced Scouts can also benefit from some of the adult leader training to help with their advanced leadership skills.  In the Adult Leader Training section, adults can find links to online leader courses, training events, and resources to help them provide the best program for the youth of our community.

The Venturing Oath

As a Venturer,
I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America,
to help others,
and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world.

The Venturing Code

As a venturer, I believe that America's strength lies in our trust in God and and in the courage, strength, and traditions of our people.

I will, therefore, be faithful in my religious duties and will maintain a personal sense of honor in my own life.

I will treasure my heritage and will do all I can to preserve and enrich it.

I will recognize the dignity and worth of all humanity and will use fair play and goodwill in my daily life.

I will acquire the Venturing attitude that seeks the truth in all things and adventure on the frontiers of our changing world.
